Portfolio Wordpress Theme

June 29th, 2008 - By: Sorel Mihai

Porftolio Wordpress Theme” is a wordpress theme designed for web portfolios and (for now) just for web portfolios. It is coming with an Administrative Panel from where you can edit the head quote text, you can edit all theme colors, font families, font sizes and you can fill a curriculum vitae and display it into a special page. Pretty Cool, eh?

Download: Portfolio Wordpress Theme (10904)

It comes with a lot of features, so here the “how-to-work-with” tutorial. If there is something you don’t understand, just leave a comment!

Instalation:

  1. Download Theme Files;
  2. Upload “Brightness Theme” folder to wp-content/themes from your wordpress ftp.
  3. Go to “Design” Page from your wordpress dashboard and activate it.
  4. That’s it!

Any Questions?

This is the basic information you need to run “Portfolio Wordpress Theme” If there are any kind of questions just comment, be sure that I will reply.

@sorel so I got what the problem was I am using on all my sites the admin drop down menu from Ozh this for some reason gives the url above rather than adding admin.php?page= after /wp-admin/

just thought i would add this in case anyone else had the same problem later and thought its something wrong with the theme, its not ;)

now i’m ready to take the theme for a test drive :)

So, are the posts in no way clickable? Did you disable that for this theme?

I like the look of this a lot, but I have to think how it would work with no way to directly link to individual posts. Or am I wrong?

Jon Swerens July 1st, 2008 at 3:18 pm Permalink #

@jon if you add

[code] <a href=”" rel=”bookmark” title=”Permanent Link to “>[code]

in between the h2 tags on line 356 of index.php then i took the single.php from sorel’s brightness theme and copied it into the portfolio theme folder then delete line 19 which is the call to the sidebar, this works but you will need to add some style. you can copy the style’s from the style.css in the brightness theme to get the class names and then paste it into index.php of the portfolio theme but it still looks a bit strange so you will need to play around!

i’m just a beginner so maybe someone has a better solution?

roger July 1st, 2008 at 3:38 pm Permalink #
14

the code didnt paste right into the previous comment but if you look at the code in between the h2 tags of index.php in sorel’s brightness theme line 14 this is the code to copy into the portfolio index.php line 356.

@sorel how do you put code in your comments?

roger July 1st, 2008 at 3:40 pm Permalink #
15

@Jon: This is the first version, is designed only for perspective. In the 1.1 version there will be an addon for single / commens page.

@Roger: I will install a plugin right now.

Sorel Mihai July 1st, 2008 at 5:43 pm Permalink #

@Sorel: Oh, OK! Because as it is right now, if someone clicks on an item in the RSS feed, it can only go back to the home page, whether or not that post is actually displayed there.

Thanks for your efforts.

@Sorel: Hey, here’s an idea that would be pretty simple for you but would add useability to the Theme Customization Setting admin page.

Why not put the default settings in text beside each of the boxes? That way, users know what they get if they don’t fill in the boxes. Plus, it’d make it easier to discern what box changes what things on your page.

Even better would be a small swatch of color after the hex code, but that would require a bit more on your part.

Thanks!
Jon

Hey Sorel,
Sorry to dbl-post, I just wanted to provide you information on your file. It is not an isolated issue as you may have thought when Josh posted the same problem.

If you could, please consider archiving the file also in tar.gz. Why does tar.gz rock? Simple! I can wget http://thefile.com strait from my server and extract it in two lines, opposed to downloading it, extracting it and then uploading it and then having to worry about deleting the files….

Consider this, because the .zip you have provided does not work on Mac OSX.

Thank you, your website has been of help to me on many occasions, don’t know what is up with this specific zip file…

triple-post.

For some reason Firefox on MacOSX corrupts the file.

So, if you have MacOSX, and are experiencing troubles with downloading this file through Firefox, then switch to Safari, download again and your problem will be solved.

Sorel, sorry for flooding your comments, it was not in bad intention. Still, consider the tar.gz alternative for us efficient types. =) Thanks again!

I don’t think this theme should be as difficult to build as it is. I can’t get images to work, more, I can’t figure out if this is stripping images out of the post, or custom field as its not documented anywhere? I also can’t figure out what is getting displayed on the actual post. Its not content within the post, so maybe a custom field?

Please let me know if there is a tutorial on this theme somewhere.

It assumed you know much more about coding/hacking. IT NEED A COMPREHENSIVE SET OF INSTRUCTIONS or set up for an average user that is much more user friendly.

The image field and image details are probably using custom fields. You just have to figure out what the custom field keys are. But I definitely agree that if you intend to release a theme for public consumption, even if you’re not going to set up a support forum, the minimum requirement is some documentation.

if you look at the index.php and then functions.php it kinda explains what you need to do.

basically you need to put brackets around a field and then the value of it…

example:

[client]client name[/client]

it will pull out ‘client name’ and format it out.

allen August 26th, 2008 at 10:21 am Permalink #

Also… fill in your CV info… the create a page called About (or CV or anything) and then at the bottom of the page, you should see an option for “Page Theme” expand that box and tell it to use the “AboutPage”

@allen thanks that was really helpful. just to clarify, all you have to do to get images working is add the following tag to your post:

Pity, it looks nice though, from what I can see in the screenshots. Is there anyone that has a working version of this theme that can be e-mailed to me? Thanks! portfolio@e-mar.nl

look at functions.php… the way posts are displayed is all right there. In the loop, it calls in some custom functions, which just searches the content for specific words wrapped in brackets and then filters out whats between and then echos out what to do.

like for the link line… I change the function to this:

function pf_uri($text) { preg_match("/\[link\](.+?)\[\/link\](.*)/is”, $text, $text2); if ($text2[1] !== NULL) { echo ‘Link: ‘.$text2[1].’‘; } }

to get the image clickable is doable…

change line 353 of index.php to:

<a href=""><img src="" alt="" />

and add a function in function.php like this:

function pf_uri2($text) { preg_match("/\[link\](.+?)\[\/link\](.*)/is”, $text, $text2); echo $text2[1]; }

when you create a post put the title in the normal field,
and in the HTML field of the editor enter information for any of the six variables(if you don’t want to use one don’t put it in and it won’t show up):
[image]http://yourwebsite.com/image.file[/image]
[client]client name[/client]

Ok I’m beginning to figure out, I need tu used special terms between [ ] but then, here is my question, why not using Custom Fields that can be saved and used each time we make a new post ? is’nt possible to make things easier ?
thanks to share your opinion.

@Matt: Hey Matt, thats the reason that I changed up the index.php in my version because I like using custom fields for images.

Hello!
First of all, my congratulation for this great theme, but I’m trying to use it and it gives me an error. When I try to go to the settings page in the menu it appears a 404 error, which says that the page isn’t there… What should I have to do?
Thanks!

WP newbie here. Great template! I cant get my formatting like your example where you have the image on left and text with links on the right. I went to enter a post and all I see is the headline and a small square where my image is supposed to be. What am I missing? Thanks.

I cannot see any new posts after I’ve made 4 posts. New posts simply do not show up. Does anyone know how to fix this?

thanks in advance

@Sam and Zim: Some people have had problems with the newest version of Wordpress. Some people were talking about that, check the comments just above yours. Good luck.

anyone know how to make a different page the home page? I’ve created a simple page called “home” instead of the included “homepage”. when i change the front page settings in the admin to use the created page, the styling disappears and the page is stripped of all styles. anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

Hi,

What do I need to add to be able to show 5 posts and then have a NEXT or PREVIOUS link ?

Many thanks, I’m not good at coding.

Me again, I got the latest WP version and it seems I can’t show more than 5 posts, even if I set the reading setting to more…??

Thanks

Hi. Thanks for this great Theme!

How do I restrict the number of works that is displayed in the latest work section on the frontpage??

Cheers!

Found it. You have to change $my_query = new WP_Query("category_name=$portfoliocategory&showposts=1");

I’m struggling on the following thing. Perhaps someone could give me a hint:

Besides the Workexamples I want the Frontpage to display Blog (Text) Entries. That means I’d like to create a new linkitem in the menu linking to ‘blog’. On the blog page posts from a category other than the work category are displayed. And one of these entries is then displayed on the frontpage.

Basically I can’t manage to set up a page that displays entries from a certain category.

Any clues?

A really great and flexible theme. This might be a silly question, but are you using custom fields for the images? How does the theme pick up the images? I have tried using pf_image as a custom field key, have tried inserting the images inside of the post content, so far nothing has work??

Any assistance, am I doing something wrong?
