Amazing theme. Love it. Modding it now for a new site.

Anywho, here are a couple of points and suggestions…

1) the “read the rest” image on the homepage needs fixing

2) The HOMEPAGE link in the breadcrumb needs fixing (you have get_cat rather than the_cat

3) Use the post thumb plugin from http://www.alakhnor.com/post-thumb/?p=156 and then put calls and support for it in your theme. For example :
the_thumb(’altappend=.featured_&link=p&height=145&width=250&keepratio=0&limit=6&showpost=1′);

I use that on my homepage for the featured image. It is quite clear how you could also use that for the mini thumbs etc. It means no one has to use custom fields etc either. Really nifty

Finally, it would be REALLY nice to have a slight re-design to the theme at the header section to allow for far more page links (I have 15) and for a logo to be used etc. Indeed, some better design implementations for comments to be shown around the site would be great as it shows that users are interacting with the posts etc.

Overall, amazing theme, even better that it is free, and only a few bits away from being the perfect theme

1) open your demo at http://sponsoredwp.info/brightness/ and hover your mouse over the READ THE REST image. You can see that it does NOT link to the post. It is because you have instead of .

2) on a page like http://sponsoredwp.info/brightness/?p=5 you have a breadcrumb trail at the top. The HOMEPAGE link is not set. You need to change this to “/” in the url code.

3) plugins are up to you. I mean have support that uses “if” statements. So IF the user has the plugin it will use code a, if they don’t then it will use code b (the custom fields).

4) Once the DNS changes you should see a slightly modified version of the theme showing up at http://www.eatingbritain.com (credits to you are going back in when I add my re-designed footer so don’t worry and I will be donating too). All the thumbs and featured images are generated automatically from the first image in the post. No separately created images etc. Plus I have my modified header in there with logo and extra links. I would LOVE to see what you could suggest along those lines but in a better style

Are you using an auto-thumbnail generator, so that that an article’s first photo can be auto-thumbnailed for the main page? I think that’s the way to avoid using a custom-fields to add thumbnails.

hey sorel, great job on the theme. i was hoping to get started on it right away but I did notice one small bug that I can see also on the demo site you have and was hoping you have a solution.

On the main page where it lists the 10 latest articles, it seems that whatever text is in the “excerpt” for the last article in the group, is repeated for the remaining articles in the “Latest posts in category…” section.

for example I have 10 different posts appearing in the “latest 10 articles” section, and then 2 posts in each news section. Each article in the first 10 has its own unique intro text .All of the .$text. for each news item is the same even though the titles and images are different.

I was hoping to get some help and can turn on the theme to show you what I mean. Right now I have it turned off.

nevermind all of that.. to simplify the issue.. the “read more” hyperlink in the “Latest Posts in blahblah Category” is not Hyperlinked at all .. which is likely related to why the same intro text is displayed for all of my posts below the 10.

This is a fresh installation on a new copy of wordpress 2.5.1 with nothing modified/added.

I took this theme for my blog, and i think that it miss a search form. But it’s very good also !

I’m having an error with this theme that is weird. I get the text from the last displayed post under “Latest 10 Articles:” under every post in the category “News” section.

Great theme! I really like the colors and the simplicity. Does this theme support Gravatars?

First of all, WOW! This is a great theme!
Fell in love with it immediately when I saw it yesterday, and have been working on translating it into Hebrew, and modding it for one of my blogs (comment counts/gravatar/edit links).

However, I have two problems with the theme:
(a) I can’t get the change to for ver 1.2 to work - the first category (”uncategorized”) is OK, but the 2nd and 3rd categories show the excerpt (but not the titles/linkID/thumbnails) of the same unrelated post that doesn’t even belong to these categories.

(b) Search is broken. Whether the function is added in the sidebar code, or via sidebar widgets.

This said, I *really* love this theme, which looks great, and is wonderful when it comes to easy navigation an usability.

@Tayler: My version does not come with gavatars but you can add them very easy, the comment structure allows you that.

@Sharon: I will fix the search results page today. And about the first, please contact me at probmels [at] dailywp [dot] com with IM info. I’m not sure I really understand what’s the problem.

Thank you it’s working now as long as there is text in the excerpt area. If there is no text there the error continues.

My other problem with this beautiful theme is that I’m only showing 4 articles instead of 10 in the last 10 section. Any ideas?

is there a search in this theme?

How come i receive a message code while opening the “brightness settings” button? It says that the functions.php file is not found (code 404 etc.) I have checked the file on the server, and it is there.

I did not make any changes in the name of the file, can someone help me out?

It depends on what version of Wordpress you use. If you use WP 2.3 there will be problems with opening the admin page. If you use WP 2.5 there will be no problems.

thanks for fixing the excerpt bug. there’s one more bug I noticed which is not major but affecting xhtml validation.

when I put my adbrite code into the ad boxes in the brightness settings page, i am adding the & a m p ; for each ampersand symbol and after saving the settings it is stripping that out and replacing it back with a & .

To echo Chris above, I started with a fresh download of the latest theme files, even checked the code on newssections.php and the excerpt text on all my News posts is a repeat of the last latest article.

I am kinda in love with the way the inside pages display Latest Posts, but I would be absolutely head over heels if we could still incorporate sidebar and widget functionality there. I tried that by adding <?php get_sidebar(); ?> after <?php include (TEMPLATEPATH . ‘/singlesidebar.php’); ?> in single.php and page.php - that works but in the stylesheet .homesidebar floats right, which works great for the home page but is off by about 20 pixels on all the other pages (you can see that on the site I am working on - http://www.southjerusalem.com ). I tried creating sidebar2.php and then replacing <?php get_sidebar(); ?> above with <?php get_sidebar2(); ?> which floats to the left in the stylesheets (added .homesidebar2) but for some reason that didn’t work. Any ideas? I really need to have widgets on every page… and there’s no reason that can’t look good, right?

Great theme mate! I’ve been using this theme for a few days now. One of my readers suggested that I show the number of comments for each post below the thumbnails/titles.

In fact, I have done a little modification to allow the number of comments to show up. I embedded the following code in the MainIndex.php

It is a fresh theme, but the lack of auto-thumbnail generation makes it more work than it needs to be. Why can’t a blogger upload a photo, insert it into his post (per usual), and all of the appropriate thumbnails are generated for the main page?

You have to add text to your excerpt for each post or you will continue to get that error I think.

@Chris: Please contact me at problems[at]dailywp.com with an example. The excerpt, if it’s empty it will be auto-generated by wordpress.

Hey guys, I am in love with this theme, but have one problem…

I want to have my logo show instead of the default or the blog title, however I can’t seem to make it work. If I trash the H1 section from the header, the whole thing is gone.

Is there a way to move the reference to the header image outside the h1 tags, so that I can just hide them? I am not really a coder… I am a history teacher!

Anyway, would appreciate any help that you could offer… hey, did I mention that I love this theme?

Superb job on your themes! A couple observations on Brightness:

1. “Latest Posts in Blog category” references correct title and Big Thumbnail of latest post, but quotes wrong post.

2. A few things don’t render correctly in Internet Explorer 6.

–Page Navigation links in header have gray boxes around them.
–Long blog title gets cut off.

Robin just go to setting > Reading of your wordpress blog and change the setting to 6-4 what ever you like.

The go to Design -> Theme Editor and open main index template (index.php) in edit mode and search for Latest 10 Articles:

change it to your relevant setting and you are done

I’m having issues trying to seperate the comments and trackbacks. Can you shed any light (or code) on the matter..?

I have made coding changes to do exactly this, but it causes both the comments and trackbacks to be displayed as trackbacks. Whereas out-of-the-box, the trackbacks are displayed in the same manner as the comments. So it seems like it’s either one or the other.

I’m wondering if ths is due to the specific comment section of the BrightnessNews theme, or if I’m erring in my php..?

I cant seem to get the feature img to work, it doesnt display the image. i set the feature for the correct vategori, and the thumb img works fine …

I can get the 85×85 “Thumbnail” to work but the “Big Thumbnail” just won’t show. I can see from the code that the term is “Big Thumbnail” and even though I’m using the correct image size (250×150) nothing comes up.

Do you have any suggestions?

I did however find that when page content is quite short, the whole page.php collapses and the footer and sidebar go wonky. I’m trying to see how I can re-structure that to fix it. Any advice?

does it use auto-image resizer?

I seem to be having the same problem some others mentioned above, I think. I can’t seem to add images to my posts.

When I select an image and click ‘insert into post’ the box goes blank and stays blank till I have to exit out with X in the top right.

Could anyone help me please?

The process to generate the Thumbnail is quite simple. However i agree that, with no information, it’s not easy to understand the procedures.

1º select the desired image, go to photoshop or paintnet, resize the pic to 85×85…save it.

2º Wordpress…write post…upload the 85×85 image and then…copy the link and paste it to “Value” in the “Customs Fields” and create a Key with the name “Thumbnail”.
Attention: don’t insert the image. Just upload and save it.

This is the process to get the thumbnail. All the rest is equal.

If you already have posts, select on the pics and follow this rules.

Done!

Is there a bug with the “Show latest posts of XXX category?”

At my site, why is every article’s author shown as specifically one person, even though he was not the one who published it? On clicking the article, it can be seen who the actual author was.

Btw for the thumbnail solution, I’m using the plugin called Flexible upload and I have the default settings to generate photos uploaded to crop at 85px square, so it saves me a lot of time.

maybe you guys can try that plugin!

Hi sorel.. I have applied your WP theme. I ahve the same problem stated in comment#29 anda we could not solved it. so we removed the duplicate text in the categories. and we removed the 4 displyed content into three on the reight part of the categories

But the main issue is the first problem; we have installed the last 1.2 version of the template.. But we could not succeed do you offer any code change and write it here or mail it to me so we can fix it.

Michael Den, I’d think you just need to replace defaultthumb.jpg in the theme’s Images folder.

One more thing, Sorel. Is there a quick and dirty way to make the admin page accessible while using one of the admin drop-down menu plugins, like this one? With the plugin activated it throws a 404 error.

Hi Aditya,

To reduce the number of posts, just go to settings and then click on the reading tab. On “Blog pages show at most” textfield, enter 5 to get 4 posts or 7 to get 6 posts.

Now, another question…. how did some of you guys able to fix the excerpt of the posts in other categories? I can’t seem to get it working.

Ok, comment 115 solved it! Just I didn’t find those instructions in the theme file

Recommend adding a variation of these new image classes to the CSS to properly style captions. I changed the caption background to your standard image outline and it looks great!

Also, in the comments section the word ‘address’ is misspelled.

First of all let me say, that I really love this theme. But what I’m really missing is a search page. My weblog has over 2000 Postings and a lot of people use the search. Is there any way to solve this problem? And another remark: At the theme homepage the changelog for version 1.1 and 1.2 are 404. And where can I get version 1.2? The download is still 1.1.

How can I delete repeated text when you click on the article. I love the way it bolds the initial paragraph, but think it is redundant to repeat it just below it. I have looked over the other posts and didn’t find an answer to this, if any one can help that would be wonderful. thanks

When i try to make a post I didn’t find an option for the picture, the only option it shows is to insert a picture in the content of the post, not the title like you do.

Love the theme! But I’m way too lazy to resize 85×85 thumbnails for all my posts, so I wrote a (crappy) function below to extra the first jpg/png out of each of my posts and set that equal to $thumb = getThumbnail(get_the_content()) in your theme. Seems to work pretty well

Dianne >> Your blog title is too long that’s why it makes the featured section go down. Moreover you can disable the red title “News” in the theme options.

Tanya Gagnon, in the file ’single.php’, remove the line that includes ‘php the_excerpt’. Remove the entire line. Should be line 11 of that file. Do not remove that line from any other file.

Great theme but still have the same problem (#118) don’t get the
functions page, bad redirection. I’m using WP 2.6.0 , is that the problem ?

I’ve tried to activated this theme in WP-2.6.1
But the preview loaded iframe is show blank.
When I inspect the iframe via firebug, there is nothing, just html and body tag.
Is this compatible with wp-2.6.1?
And one more thing. I’ve been through such situation with WP-Remix2 Installation. To make it working, I had to download and install a new XAMPP, since I use WAMP. The only problem was with the <? sign.
Since WAMPP2 uses php’s short open tag to Off, the <? should be <?php
So, I did the same search and found on glitch. Nothing big but might cause New users a prolific headache. It’s in the file singlesidebar.php

I´ve created varius sub-pages depending of a principal page (contact page) but i don´t see in menubar. I see Hompage, information, contact….but not subpages. How can I do it?

I love the theme. Trying to get mine customized and have a (probably very basic) question. For page I want the text to wrap around the images but it doesn’t happen automatically. I am using WP 2.6.1 and after inserting the photo set it to “Align Right” — but the text only appears above and below the picture.

Any suggestions?

I just downloaded the theme and noticed that the CSS still reports 1.1 and the excerpt bug is not fixed. Does anyone have the solution to fixing the excerpt problem in 1.1. Also, the 1.2 changelog link generates a 404.

How to insert pictures next to the article preview?

To add Auto-Thumbnail generation do the following:

1. Download phpThumb from:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=106407&package_id=114543

2. Put the directory into the root of your wordpress installation
/yourWProot/phpThumb

3. Rename the default phpThumb config file to:
phpThumb.config.php

4. Edit index.php, newssection.php, singlesidebar.php of brightness Template so all instances of:

echo $thumb;

become

echo ‘phpThumb/phpThumb.php?src=’ . $thumb . ‘&w=85&zc=1′;

5. be sure to add ‘Thumbnail’ customfields without http part starting with:

/yourWProot/yourImageLocation/imagetomakethumbnailoutof.jpg/png/gif/bnp

this only generates thumbnails of 85px width. to force them to something other check phpThumb documentation. Main disadvantage would be that you have to hardcode into the template files.

You could edit code so an added second customfield would handle the params or you could add the params to the imageurl in the customfields section. Make sure you edit the code to remove the hardcoded width etc….

hope that helps. took me about 5 minutes to add the autoresize to this fantastic template of yours. thanks so much for sharing it.

on line 15 in index.php change:

to

Do I need to do this procedure this for every article I create?

you add ‘Thumbnail’ as Key and the full path (full as in from the root folder of your wp installation) to your ‘Value’ field.

works well for me but i admit, that it helps if you know what you are doing inside php and dir structures etc.

uploading an immage (either via ftp, the media upload of wp or any other way) and adding the customfield has to be done for each article yes. you can reuse images for multiple articles of course.

hi. it would be very cool if someone would cross the customfield frontier whit pictos for thumbnails. your theme is the most advanced in terms of settings over wp-admin i came accross so far. so i guess you would be the person to go the extra step.

what i have in mind would be something like a very simple upload mechanism inside the theme settings tab. you would display a list of article titles (20 at a time or so) and a little picto indicating that there are thumbnail pics online for the article and an edit link. clicking on edit would popup a dhtml upload window where i can upload a small and a big thumbnailimage. after that the image would be automatically read out as thumbnail.

if combined with phpthumb as i commented (coment 190/191) this would be a killer feature.

well you could integrate phpthumb into the template actually, then all this would be a lot easier still….

I’m making sure I understand the instructions for making thumbnail images appear.

1) FTP/upload the image (must be 85 x 85 pixels) to the images area of the brightness theme on your server.

2) Write the post in the WordPress interface.

3) Under Advanced Options/Custom Fields, enter ‘Thumbnail’ for the key and the path for the value.

4) Save/publish the post.

Ok, if the above is correct then I think I’m not pasting the path correctly. Where do I get the path? I copied the chain to the images directory from my FTP client. It looks like this:

/survivorfile.com/wp-content/themes/brightness/images

Then I added the name of the image like so: /survivorfile.com/wp-content/themes/brightness/images/bittersweet85.jpg

Is this correct? (It’s not working….)

I’ve run into a problem of duplicate posts. The post shows up in the correct places (i.e. Recent Posts as well as it’s category), however the lead text on the category listing is being pulled from another article. You will need to add some custom CSS. For example, if you want your images to align left with wrapping content, add the following css:
.singlepost .alignleft { float: left; display: inline; }

or right:
.singlepost .alignright { float: right; display: inline; }

if you would like a safety margin around your images, you could also do:
.singlepost img { margin: 10px; }

Great theme! I have been using it for a while now.

I am not sure if I am the only one, but it seems after upgrading to WP 2.7 beta, the featured section at the top of home page and news section at the bottom do not work anymore! In the admin section, the options for the news section are also gone.

Tried looking at the code and changing a few things but nothing has worked so far! I am hoping you will be coming out with an update soon as I absolutely love this theme!

I appreciate that the site’s back and that someone figured out the 2.7 problem, but I’ve done so much tinkering with it since the theme broke and the site went offline, that I doubt I’ll try to update. Among other alterations, I’ve incorporated 2.7 comment threading and changed font sizes so the date doesn’t split into two lines during long-named months.

when i download the .zip file, it unzips to a .zip.cpgz file, which unzips to a .zip file, which unzips to a .zip.cpgz file and so on and so on. any idea what’s going on? i’m on a mac… learning via google that this is most likely a problem with the way it was zipped in the first place. no real way to solve it on my end w/o using a PC. just a heads up.

Are you using an auto-thumbnail generator, so that that an article’s first photo can be auto-thumbnailed for the main page? I think that’s the way to avoid using a custom-fields to add thumbnails.

Theme works great on my mac and on my windows 7 pc, but when I try to load it on an older pc (windows xp pro) it doesn’t show up. Just a blank white screen, which then messes up the whole theme all together. When I go to reload it on my mac or windows 7 pc it doesn’t load? As if something in an older browser is causing the theme to malfunction. Very confusing. Anyone have any ideas?

I’ve tried some setting WITHOUT change the Featured Category value but, after saving, it doesn’t work!
Now I don’t know how to make visible again the Featured Article in my Home.

to activate the “Featured Category” should create the categories “0″ and “1″ … the page where you write the post or the page where you edit the post. Then enable the new post with the category “1″.

Thanks a lot for your great theme ! There’s still one little thing which I can’t fix.

When I don’t allow the comments, then the side bad is floating, and moving away to the right side of the screen. See the difference between the post “Studieresor till USA” which doesn’t allow comment and move to the right, with the other posts. The others posts allow comments and thus don’t move.

Any ideas ?

Thanks for this theme. I spent many hours searching and finally found this one. Nice one.

It took me some time to figure out how to insert the thumbs but now I’ve got that sorted it’s all good. Those of you still not sure, search previous comments as it’s described there.

I noticed that the Copyright info is still set to 2008 in footer.php so, with my (very) limited knowledge of PHP I came up with this little script for the non technical users here.

Firstly, navigate to “Appearance”, “Editor” and select “footer.php”.

Find the text:
Copyright © 2008.

and replace with:

Copyright © 200n -

Don’t forget to change the 200n to whatever the start year for your blog was.

Sorry to bore the more advanced users but I thought I’d make my little contribution for the less advanced users amongst us.
